Abandoned Hearts is a single-player psychological horror title in the action, indie, and adventure genres, available on PC. Players take on the role of an investigator hired by families to determine what caused a fatal fire that claimed an entire renovation crew inside Blackthorne Castle. The experience centers on exploration, evidence gathering, and survival against unseen threats while piecing together the events leading to the tragedy.
Gameplay
The core loop involves searching rooms throughout the abandoned castle for documents and other remnants left by the renovation crew. Environmental puzzles must be solved to access new areas and reveal additional clues. Discoveries are then physically arranged on an evidence board, where connections between items help form an interpretation of what occurred. Different combinations of clues can lead to varying conclusions about the crew's final days.
Survival elements require careful resource management. Batteries power a light source needed to navigate dark spaces, while medical supplies address injuries sustained during encounters. Threats move through the halls just beyond the light, forcing players to hide, create distractions, or flee when necessary. As the investigation deepens, sensory reliability decreases through hallucinations and shifting environments that challenge perception of what is real.
Game Modes
Abandoned Hearts is designed exclusively as a single-player experience. No multiplayer options or alternate game modes are available. The structure focuses on a linear investigative narrative within Act One, which provides a self-contained story arc lasting roughly two to four hours depending on individual play style and exploration thoroughness.
Story and Atmosphere
The narrative unfolds through collected evidence rather than direct exposition. Players reconstruct events by interpreting documents and physical traces, with the evidence board serving as the central tool for building a personal theory. The castle itself acts as both setting and antagonist, with its darkened corridors and lingering presence creating constant tension. Unsettling discoveries erode trust in the player's own senses, blending investigation with moments of intense psychological pressure.
Is It Worth Playing?
Abandoned Hearts delivers a focused investigative horror experience suited to players who enjoy piecing together stories through exploration and deduction alongside survival tension. Act One stands alone as a complete chapter while setting up potential future content through separate releases. Those drawn to psychological elements, environmental interaction, and resource-driven tension will find the mechanics align directly with these interests. The title emphasizes interpretation of evidence and personal conclusions over action or combat, making it a deliberate choice for fans of slower-paced horror with strong narrative reconstruction.
