Backwatt is a co-op top-down action roguelite for one to four players on PC. Players drop into arenas, survive waves of enemies, and return to a central barge to upgrade their gear before the next round begins.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on inventory management inside a grid-based backpack. Every weapon, generator, and support module occupies specific cells, and energy weapons require direct connections to power sources or generators. Limited power forces constant decisions about which items stay active and which sit in storage during each wave.
Identical items can merge into higher-level versions that deliver more damage while freeing up space. This system rewards careful planning of layouts and synergies between firearms, melee weapons like the katana, energy tools such as Tesla coils and railguns, and utility modules.
Between waves, players visit the hold to purchase new equipment, rearrange the backpack, select upgrades, and test weapons on a firing range. Each act lasts roughly fifteen to twenty minutes and ends with a boss encounter after six waves.
Game Modes
Standard play consists of four seasonal acts. Spring brings wolf packs and rolling mines. Summer features charging rhinos. Autumn introduces shield bearers and flamethrowers. Winter adds artillery units. Each season alters enemy behavior and requires adjusted strategies.
After clearing the acts, Endless mode continues with rotating seasons and increasing difficulty. A marathon option strings every act together for longer sessions. The game supports solo runs or online co-op with up to three friends, where downed teammates revive by standing on marked plates and colored crates prevent loot disputes.
Heroes and Progression
Six distinct heroes each bring a unique passive trait, an active ability, and a skill tree that shapes long-term builds. These choices combine with the backpack system to create varied playstyles across multiple runs.
Support modules placed in the backpack provide team-wide bonuses such as armor, extra damage, or healing to nearby allies, encouraging coordinated positioning during fights.
Is It Worth Playing?
Backwatt suits players who enjoy roguelite runs built around inventory puzzles and resource management rather than pure shooting or movement skill. The grid layout and energy constraints create meaningful choices every wave, while co-op elements add teamwork without requiring perfect coordination.
The seasonal enemy variety and hero skill trees support repeated playthroughs, especially for those who like optimizing builds across short acts or pushing further in Endless mode. A demo version offers two heroes, sixty items, solo and co-op support, and the full set of seasonal acts, allowing direct testing of the core systems before committing.
