Before industry, before empire, before law - there was only the primal, pain, predators, and those with the will to outlast them.
You are barefoot, alone, exposed. No map. No mission. Just wilderness - ancient, and hostile.
First, you'll fight to stay warm. To not become something's lunch. Then, you'll rush to settle - to fortify, to grow your numbers, to raise defenses. And finally: to choose. Exist and endure - or to specialize and exceed?
"There is no one way to victory, yet it is always forwards."
Before is an online survival sandbox game - open-world, unforgiving, risky, and rewarding. An experience forged in the primal.
Survival
Blood, sweat, and strategy are the cost of tomorrow.
The wilderness wants you gone. So do the animals. So do the nomads. So do the other players, most of the time.
Your survivors must eat, drink, sleep, stay warm, or die trying.
Crafting
Tools, weapons, and resources are the backbone of survival.
Arm your survivors with handaxes, bows, simple spears, and perhaps, with enough skill, swords or even explosives. Forge defenses with reinforced doors, traps, and siege gear. Mine and smelt ores to craft stronger equipment and extend your tribe’s might.
Base Building
Build from the dirt up with foundations, walls, traps, and defensive towers.
Every construction piece placed is a tactical decision. Every structure built is a home, a statement, a foothold, a safe haven, or a deception in stone.
PvP with Real Consequences
Raiding is unavoidable. Preventing it is power.
Weak walls falter. Weak settlements fall. Weak strategies fail.
But place your trust in yourself, your allies, your architecture, your automated defenses, and above all - your foresight - and you may survive the night. Perhaps you'll even come to command the raiders.
Four and More Paths to Fame
Upgrade each of your survivors in unique and invaluable combinations of specializations.
Science - Study your surroundings to gain knowledge and unlock new technologies.
Faith - Sacrifice, pray, and channel the ether to manipulate the world around you and increase your following.
Culture - Unify your tribe, manipulate others, and harness the game-changing powers of arts and the written word.
Combat - Fight and dominate to unlock unique skills and tactics for battlefield prowess.
Each discipline brings new abilities, but power invites envy. Your survivors, painstakingly trained and specialized, are not invincible. Mismanage your might, and you'll become someone else's prize.
Primal Strategy
Before is not just about survival. It's about defining your little corner of the world. Or perhaps owning all of it.
Explore: Move through unique biomes, weather systems, ruins, settlements, and stories.
Develop: Build new bases, expand borders, found your tribe - or tribes, deceive, infiltrate, manipulate, conquer, or command.
Produce: Mine rare ores, claim choke points, automate production and survivors' actions.
Overpower: Rob, raid, siege or ambush. Or build defenses that vanquish and absorb the armies of others.
Endure or Exceed: Act as a territorial overlord, the right hand of powerful allies, or a rebel beyond everyone's reach.
Prestige Has a Memory
Eventually, the map will wipe. The fray will end. After each wipe a new sun will rise, a new land will be there for your taking. And you will be readier for it.
Nonetheless, your actions are forever.
→ Which tribe held the most territory?
→ Who mined the most riches?
→ Who had the oldest surviving settlement?
→ Who ruled in Science? Faith? Culture? Combat?
→ Which solos/duos/trios/quads/clans were the most powerful? Influential?
→ Who crafted the most? Who traded the most?
There are many paths to prestige.
As the world turns, the leaderboard will count your successes. And when the world resets, your fame will remain.
