Iris: The World is a free-to-play fantasy MMORPG set on the continent of Anais. Players join expeditions from the fortress of Terminus to recover fragments of the shattered Ipinidas Rune while facing roaming Sahar forces in a world shaped by ancient magic and curses.
Gameplay
Character creation begins with one of three races, each tied to specific base classes. Humans select Fighter or Mage paths. Elves choose Ranger or Shaman. Hybrids take Warrior or Rogue. Every base class advances through two or three job paths followed by a second advancement, producing specializations such as Knight, Templar, High Priest, Assassin, Elementalist, or Champion.
The tarot system forms the core progression loop. A full deck of 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana cards can be slotted to unlock abilities, applied to enhance equipment, or used at fortune-telling stalls to grant blessings to other players. Monster transformation cards drop from enemies and appear in NPC shops. Activating one lets a player assume a creature's speed and three skills while retaining personal stats.
Exploration and daily activities revolve around quests scattered across Anais, guild management with custom emblems and ranks, player-to-player trading, personal shops, an auction house, mounts, titles, mail, and friend lists. These systems support both solo advancement and group coordination in a persistent online environment.
Game Modes
Instanced theme dungeons open and close around specific tarot cards. Each offers tougher bosses and exclusive rewards not found in the open world. Survival and Capture the Flag battlefields award points, experience, and skill experience per match. Duels can occur anywhere on the map, with winners receiving temporary buffs.
PvE content emphasizes the 22 themed instance dungeons alongside broader questing and monster hunting. PvP options range from structured battlefields to open duels, allowing players to test builds gained through tarot customization and transformations in direct competition.
Story and Setting
Long ago the prodigy mage Shuland Acrein broke the Ipinidas Rune, source of elven magic, and rose as the Dark Lord. He forged a weapon from a rune fragment, opened dimensional rifts, and summoned the Sahar to conquer the land. Twenty-two archmages imprisoned him, but his final curse stripped their magic. They adapted by mastering tarot cards. Leaderless Sahar now wander freely, prompting expeditions from Terminus to reclaim the scattered rune pieces.
Is It Worth Playing?
The game remains in pre-launch development with a planned Steam release in Q1 2027. Its distinctive combination of tarot-driven progression, monster transformations, and tarot-themed dungeons sets it apart from standard fantasy MMORPGs. Players interested in class branching across three races, card-based customization, and mixed PvE and PvP battlefields will find multiple systems to explore once servers open. Free-to-play access removes any upfront cost barrier, and adding the title to a wishlist ensures readiness for launch. Those seeking conventional leveling without the tarot layer may prefer other established MMORPGs, while fans of unique mechanics centered on divination and shape-shifting have clear reasons to follow development updates through official channels.
