Grimmarch is a folk-horror card RPG that blends strategy and role-playing elements on PC. Players guide a lone hero through a borderland overtaken by the Gloam, a spreading darkness that swallows roads and isolates towns. The experience centers on deliberate choices during travel and simultaneous card-based combat that rewards reading opponents rather than reacting in real time.
Gameplay
The core loop involves walking between three distinct regions on foot. Thornwick Vale, the Cindermoor, and Hollowfen Reach each contain a city for rest and trade, with farms, ditches, crossroads, and roadside encounters filling the spaces between. Every stop presents a concrete decision with permanent consequences, such as returning a lost item for payment, selling tools for silver, or moving on without involvement. Lighting a region's cold beacon thins the Gloam locally and opens further options.
Combat unfolds through simultaneous card selection. Both the player and enemies commit cards face down each turn without knowledge of the opposing choices. Once revealed, cards resolve in a fixed order, turning every exchange into a prediction about timing and intent. The system supports group planning when friends join, allowing coordinated turns without idle waiting.
Two base classes define the starting approach. The Blade relies on sword, shield, and guard tactics to hold position and deliver heavy strikes. The Arcanist channels ember, ash, and frost effects from behind protective wards. Leveling grants talent points that branch into specialized builds within each class, shaping long-term playstyle through the talent tree.
Game Modes
The full campaign serves as the primary mode and supports solo play from start to finish. Offline functionality handles single-player sessions, while online connection remains optional. Players can recruit AI companions to fill party slots when traveling alone.
Online co-op allows up to four friends to join the same campaign session. Heroes can be lent to others or borrowed during offline periods, enabling shared progress across separate playtimes. Regular groups may form a Free Company to pursue collective objectives within the shared world.
Progression and Deck Building
Each hero begins with a twelve-card starter deck and expands a personal collection through quest rewards, trader purchases, and silver earned along the road. Cards acquired multiple times convert into Whetstones that raise a chosen card's level up to three. A fully upgraded card gains increased power, such as a Sword Oath dealing twelve damage instead of nine. Excess Whetstones accumulate in a shared pool for use on any card in the collection.
Deck construction stays tied to the cards a specific hero owns. No randomized packs or external purchases exist, keeping all advancement within earned resources and in-game economy.
Is It Worth Playing?
Grimmarch suits players who enjoy methodical strategy, meaningful single decisions, and card combat that emphasizes foresight over reflexes. The campaign structure delivers a complete, self-contained experience without ongoing seasons or additional purchases. Solo travelers receive flexible support through AI hires and offline access, while groups gain tools for coordinated or asynchronous cooperation. Those drawn to folk-horror atmosphere, permanent choices, and class-specific card sets will find consistent depth across regions and encounters. The absence of real-money elements and focus on earned progression further align it with audiences seeking a one-time purchase with lasting replay value through different class paths and deck experiments.
