Heretics Amulet is a dark tarot-inspired roguelike card game developed for PC as a complete single-player experience. Players take on the role of the Heretic in a cycle of death and rebirth, managing numbered cards across a grid to minimize damage while collecting souls for upgrades.
Gameplay
Each round begins with a grid of face-down numbered cards and a set number of draws. A player draws a card and decides whether to place it in the grid, replacing whatever lies there, or discard it to flip another hidden card. The goal is to lower the total value on the table before draws run out, since any remaining sum becomes damage taken. Clearing an entire row or column of matching values removes that line and grants bonus souls, though missing the final card in a set can leave the player exposed.
Between rounds, souls fund purchases from a store. Some items provide immediate effects such as adding cards to the deck, removing or altering existing ones, or restoring health. Others function as permanent upgrades that persist across runs. Examples include Mala Beads, which increase draws per round, Sacrificial Daggers, which raise maximum health, and Runic Feathers, which repair the Amulet to improve soul retention. Deck manipulation encourages experimentation, balancing short-term survival against long-term power.
Game Modes
The core campaign consists of eight acts. Each act concludes with a boss encounter that introduces a unique rule change, forcing adaptation to altered mechanics. Progress through the acts unlocks additional tarot cards that expand the lore.
Freeplay operates as a separate endless mode. Each run begins with fresh stats, and difficulty increases every five rounds. Personal bests for the highest round reached and total souls collected are tracked across sessions, allowing players to test extreme deck configurations without affecting campaign progress.
The World and Story
The setting revolves around a Wheel of death and rebirth that erases memories with each turn, except for the Heretic who retains full recollection. Exiled by the Great Kingdoms, the protagonist faces waves of legions sent to the gates. A possessed skull serves as the Tarot Dealer, voicing the kingdoms in turn. Narrative elements unfold through twelve original tarot cards unlocked by clearing acts, each accompanied by lore entries for items and an original cosmology that players assemble from fragments.
Features and Presentation
The game includes thirty unique items split between temporary run effects and permanent upgrades. Low-fi retro visuals pair with tarot-inspired card art, all created by a single developer along with twelve original music tracks that unlock for an in-game listening room. Twenty-one achievements track various accomplishments, and the title launches as a finished product with no early access period.
Is It Worth Playing?
Heretics Amulet suits players who enjoy roguelike card games with tight resource management and incremental deck building. The core loop of grid placement and line clearing rewards careful planning while still allowing greedy risks for higher rewards. Permanent upgrades and the separate endless mode provide replayability for those who want to refine strategies over multiple runs. The single-developer scope keeps the experience focused on the card mechanics and atmospheric presentation rather than expansive systems. Those drawn to indie titles with original art, music, and lore delivered through collectible cards will find a complete package that emphasizes decision-making in every draw.
