THIS GAME COSTS $500 is an indie casual puzzle game for PC that challenges players to reach an in-game score milestone framed as a dollar value. The core loop revolves around classic falling-block mechanics with a progression system tied directly to score milestones rather than traditional high scores alone.
Gameplay
Seven different four-block pieces fall onto a 10 by 20 board. Players move pieces left or right, rotate them clockwise or counterclockwise, soft drop or hard drop them into place, and hold one piece for later use. A preview shows the next three pieces, and an optional ghost piece indicates where the current piece will land. Filling a horizontal row completely clears it, with bonuses for clearing multiple rows at once using a single piece. Consecutive clears build combos that add extra points, while a piece that clears no lines ends the current combo. Every ten lines cleared increases the level, up to a maximum of level 21, which speeds up piece fall rates and raises point values for line clears.
The score directly feeds into a VALUE system displayed on screen alongside the current score. This system follows a fixed ladder of ten milestones: $0.01, $0.10, $1, $5, $10, $25, $50, $100, $250, and $500. Reaching each milestone triggers an on-screen announcement and sound effect. The $500 target serves only as an in-game goal and does not represent the game's price or any real-money transaction.
Game Modes
The game features one endless single-player mode. Every run begins with a score of zero and continues until the stack reaches the top of the board and the next piece cannot enter. At that point, a results screen displays the final score, lines cleared, level reached, highest combo, play time, highest VALUE milestone achieved, and progress toward the next milestone, along with personal best records. Players can retry immediately or return to the menu.
Features and Progression
Thirteen in-game achievements track progress across VALUE milestones, overall score, level, combos, and four-line clears. An in-game high-score leaderboard lets players compare runs. A dedicated How to Play screen outlines all controls and the full VALUE ladder. Settings allow adjustment of master, music, and sound-effect volumes, plus toggles for the ghost piece and grid display. Music adapts during play, with additional layers activating as the level rises. Keyboard controls include arrow keys for movement and soft drop, up arrow for clockwise rotation, Z for counterclockwise rotation, spacebar for hard drop, C for hold, and escape to pause. No in-game purchases exist.
Reaching the Goal and Game Over
When VALUE hits the $500 milestone, play pauses for a celebration screen stating "$500 - YOU MADE IT." Players may then continue the same run to push the score higher or exit to the main menu. A run ends only when the stack blocks new pieces from entering, after which the results screen provides detailed stats for review.
Is It Worth Playing?
This title suits players who enjoy precise, skill-based falling-block puzzles and the satisfaction of chasing incremental milestones in a single endless mode. The VALUE ladder adds a clear long-term target without altering the fundamental Tetris-style loop, while features like combos, leveling, and adaptive audio provide steady feedback and variety within runs. The absence of additional modes or monetization keeps the focus narrow and straightforward. Those seeking a pure, no-frills puzzle experience with a distinctive scoring twist will find the mechanics rewarding through repeated attempts and personal best improvements.
