Touhou Gensokyo Defense is a strategy indie RPG for PC in which players defend Gensokyo by positioning heroines to repel waves of youkai. The core loop centers on automatic danmaku fire from placed characters while the player manages positioning, spell card selection, and resource choices between waves.
Gameplay
Enemies advance along lanes toward a barrier, and the seven available heroines handle attacks independently once positioned. Each character brings a distinct basic attack, on-hit passive effect, and unique spell card. Up to five placement slots exist on the field, with reach and coverage varying by spot to suit different attack styles such as wide-area magic or focused physical strikes.
Stages provide advance notice of whether the upcoming threats favor physical or magic defenses, allowing players to adjust party composition accordingly. Kills contribute to a shared level that pauses combat and presents three card options: improving an individual skill, boosting the entire party, or strengthening the barrier. Rerolls are available when options do not align with the current run, and pushing a skill to level four activates stacking Mastery bonuses for that battle.
Every fifth stage features a boss encounter with two phases and its own spell card. Defeating the boss unlocks the character for purchase in the shop, with specific thresholds for Youmu, Mystia, Patchouli, Cirno, and Sakuya, while Yuyuko appears at the conclusion of the forty-stage campaign. Eight enemy archetypes, including rushers, heavies, flyers, and splitters, plus elite traits such as shields or status resistance, vary the challenge across runs.
Permanent upgrades purchased between attempts persist across playthroughs, covering character unlocks, signature skills, barrier strength, and economy improvements. Traits can be equipped to alter spell behavior, such as changing a seal from wide to concentrated or extending a time-stop effect, with free swapping at any time. Battles last between five and twelve minutes, and failed runs still award coins earned from kills for use on the next attempt.
Game Modes
The game operates as a single-player campaign structured around forty sequential stages. Progress occurs through repeated attempts at the map, with each run building on permanent upgrades while introducing variation through card choices and enemy compositions. No separate multiplayer or additional modes are present; the experience remains focused on offline progression through the main sequence of encounters and boss fights.
Progression and Upgrades
Between stages, players spend accumulated resources on lasting improvements that carry forward. Character availability expands through shop purchases unlocked by boss victories, and the economy system supports consistent advancement even after unsuccessful runs. The absence of cutscenes keeps the focus on rapid iteration, with all non-essential elements skippable to maintain momentum through the campaign.
Is It Worth Playing?
Touhou Gensokyo Defense suits players who enjoy strategic placement and incremental decision-making within a tower-defense framework blended with RPG elements. The automatic combat paired with manual positioning and card-based choices creates repeatable runs that reward adaptation to stage previews and enemy variety. Permanent upgrades and free trait swapping support long-term experimentation across the forty stages without requiring additional purchases. Those seeking a concise, single-player strategy experience centered on danmaku mechanics and character-specific abilities will find the structure accessible and self-contained.
