Fire of Changbai is a 2D real-time tactics game set against the backdrop of the anti-Japanese guerrilla war in Northeast China in the 1930s. Players take on the role of a Korean guerrilla captain, completing missions while encircled by enemy forces. The story and maps are drawn from real history, narrating—from the perspective of a Korean anti-Japanese leader—the major events from Japan's invasion of Northeast China in 1931 to the liberation of the region with Soviet assistance in 1945, including: the Autumn Harvest Struggle, the Xiaoyingziling Ambush, the assault on Dongning County, the expedition to Northern Manchuria, the Battle of Pochonbo, the retreat to the Soviet Union, and the final battle against the Japanese invaders.
As guerrilla captain, the player must flexibly allocate preparation points among twelve anti-Japanese policies—including the Juche ideology—and make full use of terrain bonuses and unit combinations in combat in order to defeat superior numbers with fewer forces.
In 1931, Japanese imperialism engineered the Mukden Incident, which raised the curtain on World War II. By the time Germany blitzkrieged Poland in 1939, they had already been fighting bloody battles in the white mountains and black waters for eight full years. By the time the United States declared war on Japan in 1941 and the Anti-Fascist Alliance was established, they had already been holding their ground in the ice and snow for ten full years. By the time the Japanese aggressors tremblingly signed the instrument of surrender, they had already borne the brunt on this black soil with their flesh and blood for fourteen full years. Down with Japanese imperialism!
