Midnight 42 is an asymmetric online party game for PC in which one player tries to get a full night's sleep while up to six others play as mosquitoes determined to keep that from happening. The core loop runs through a single six-minute night that spans from 10 PM to 6 AM in real time, with the human side winning by falling asleep and the mosquito side winning by driving the human to snap or by simply lasting until dawn.
Gameplay
The human player begins by completing household chores before climbing into bed. The more tasks left unfinished, the longer it takes to drift off. Mosquitoes can be swatted with a flyswatter, brushed away by hand during chores, or snatched from the air. Each bite causes an itch that slows work if ignored and leaves the player defenseless for two seconds if scratched. Turning off the lights speeds sleep but removes visibility of incoming threats. Positional audio makes the buzzing audible through headphones, helping locate mosquitoes before they land.
Playing as a mosquito offers free flight around the room with options to hide in corners or on the ceiling beyond swatter reach. Landing on the human triggers a timed key sequence to drink blood. Three successful feeds in a row trigger a rage dash for the next bite. Mosquitoes must keep feeding or they run out of blood and drop. Being swatted sends a mosquito back after a short wait that shortens as the night progresses and bites grow more painful.
Game Modes
Two maps rotate automatically based on player count, though the host can override the choice. The Small Room supports two to five players and focuses on finishing chores, getting into bed, and falling asleep before dawn. The Big House uses Deadline Mode for six or seven players, where the human must type, save, and print a manuscript before 6 AM. Mosquitoes can sabotage the router to cut internet, the fuse box to kill power, the PC to crash it, or the printer to jam it. Coffee helps the human stay awake until nature calls.
Between rounds players vote on roles with options for human only, either side, or mosquito only. Volunteers take priority, and the player who has spent the least time as the human receives the next turn. A full session cycles through one night per participant before an awards screen highlights standouts such as the Blood King or Swatter Magnet.
Key Mechanics and Features
Matches support two to seven players online through private rooms created with a six-character code. Nights unfold in three acts with increasing intensity, including faster mosquito respawns and stronger bites near dawn. Every successful swat leaves a visible mark on the wall. The game supports both Korean and English text. Early access status means the title continues to receive updates focused on balance and additional content.
Is It Worth Playing?
Midnight 42 suits groups that enjoy short, repeatable sessions with clear asymmetry and light strategy. The six-minute rounds keep matches brisk while the role rotation and private-room system encourage repeated play with the same friends. Players who prefer direct competition over large-scale matchmaking or public lobbies will find the focused 1-versus-many structure engaging. Those looking for solo content or extensive single-player campaigns should look elsewhere, as the experience centers entirely on multiplayer nights. The combination of simple controls, distinct roles, and escalating tension makes it a solid choice for casual evenings when the group wants quick rounds without long commitments.
